Press Statement, 16 November 2019
NUM IS READY AND PREPARED FOR THE UPCOMING MARIKANA RALLY TOMORROW
The National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) is ready and prepared to co-host and lead the workers rally with the Congress of South African Trade Unions (COSATU) scheduled for this coming Sunday 17th November 2019 at Marikana West Community Hall.
The aim of organizing the rally in Marikana is to try and resuscitate the NUM in the platinum belt. Since the start of the rampant killings of our members in 2012, we have never held a national rally in the area. Our members have long been calling for such a rally but due to logistics, we have been unable to hold it. COSATU affiliates from the surrounding areas will be in full attendance.
The NUM urges all mineworkers, irrespective of union membership, the COSATU union affiliates and members of the community to support the upcoming Marikana rally.
Seven years later, workers are still forced to deal with the spectre of violence that continues to haunt the mining sector and the platinum belt, in particular. Marikana cannot be allowed to become a slaughterhouse for the workers and a playground for assassins.
NUM President Joseph Montisetse, COSATU 1st deputy president Mike Shingange, ANC Chaiperson and former NUM General Secretary, SACP Chairperson Senzeni Zokwana and former NUM President will address the rally tomorrow.
The details of the rally are as follows:
Date: 17 November 2017
Time: 10:00 am
Venue: Marikana West Community Hall.
We are expecting between 15 000 and 20 000 members to attend from the NUM regions such as Free State, Carletonville, Matlosana, North East, Highveld, Kimberley, and PWV.
Members of the media are invited to attend and report
