NUM is worried that 79 mineworkers were trapped underground yesterday at Sibanye Stillwater Kloof Mine

NUM Press Statement, 23 March 2018

NUM is worried that 79 mineworkers were trapped underground yesterday at Sibanye Stillwater Kloof Mine

The National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) is concerned and worried that 79 mineworkers were yesterday trapped underground at Kloof Thuthukani Shaft in Westonaria. The incident happened at 4 pm in the afternoon after the material car fell into the shaft and led to workers being trapped underground. The workers were rescued at 9 pm last night.

The NUM is deeply worried about the health and safety standards at Sibanye Stillwater gold operations. Mineworkers are not safe at all.

We call on the Department of Mineral Resources (DMR) inspectorate to do a thorough investigation as to what caused the incident yesterday. The NUM will leave no stone unturned during the investigation of this incident.
