NUM Kimberley Region is unhappy with KEM JV for issuing retrenchment letters of  to its members

The National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) in Kimberley Region is disturbed by the inhuman and insensitive treatment of KEM JV management after they issued retrenchment letters to NUM members on the 18th of September 2018 after failing to convince the unions of their decision to retrench.

"NUM is not in agreement with the company for the irresponsible and excessive management expenditure without accountability only to compromise employees with this retrenchment. The company has used discriminatory criteria to deal and get rid of NUM members without justified process. The company has disregarded agreements in place without consulting NUM and other recognised unions," said Cornelius Manhe, NUM Kimberley Regional Secretary.

"KEM JV Management further failed to wait for the advice of the Minister of Resources on Section 52 Committee recommendations before issuing the retrenchment letters. KEM JV management has tendencies to undermine South Africa’s authority of which raises alarms of any collision within this departments," Manhe added.

The NUM calls for the Competition Commission to carefully look into the matter of demerger of Petra Diamonds from KEM JV as this can have a negative impact on the community of Kimberley

NUM will continue to defend its members through this tough times and ensure there is justice with the arrogance of this nature.
