NUM Kimberley Region Press Statement

The NUM in its Kimberley Region held its Regional Committee (RC) Meeting from 21st to 22nd November 2013 at the Protea Hotel (Big Hole) in Kimberley.

The RC meeting is held as per the provisions of the NUM’s constitution and it is a second higher structure to the Regional Conference empowered to take organizational decisions.

This was the last RC meeting of the year 2013 and a thorough introspection in an endeavor to pave a way to the 2014 challenges was key and central to the deliberations

The following are the highlights of the RC:

1. ORGANIZATIONAL
   Rivalry unions - There RC commended the entire membership across the three sectors i.e. Mining, Construction and Energy in the province for their continued resistance of leaving the mighty NUM to join the rivalry union AMCU, this is a sign of maturity and ever growing political and ideological consciousness. This further indicates that, although there are remnants of a very low number of defectors, the NUM remains majority in all mining and construction sectors in the Province.
   
   Recruitment – We are fairly advancing to the desired goal and the RC applauds the energy sector “ESKOM” comrades for continuing to join NUM from all spheres.
   
   Criminal Case of 49 employees dismissed by Sishen Kumba Mine-The RC welcomes the court decision of finding all 49 members NOT GUILTY on the charges of malicious damage and public violence. The NUM has always maintained that, Sishen mine management and the state had no case to proof before the tribunal.
   
   The union is therefore vindicated by the court ruling and hope this will serve as a lesson to everybody who takes workers’ plight for granted.
   
   
2. POLITICAL
   ANC - The RC has unconditionally and with no hesitation adhered to the national call of rallying behind African National Congress, the only hope for the workers and poor masses.
   
   It is for this reason that we will avail ourselves and deploy cadres to campaign for victory of the ANC in the 2014 general elections.
   
   COSATU - The NUM in the province observes the concerted efforts by progressive leaders of COSATU to bring unity and stability in the organization.

We therefore vow to continue supporting our leaders at the national level in their in endeavor to find a lasting and amicable solution to the current challenges faced by our COSATU. We fully support the CEC’s directive in ensuring that the organization restores its utmost dignity.
