Media Statement, 01 October 2024
The National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) KwaZulu-Natal region is calling on the Department of Mineral Resources and Energy to withdraw with immediate effect the mining rights of the Zululand Anthracites Colliery.
The region will tomorrow, 2nd October 2024, embark on a massive protest action directed to the Department of Mineral Resources and Energy in Durban’s Anton Lembede street to push for the department to withdraw the company’s licensing rights should it insist on going ahead with its retrenchment plans.
The region is also preparing to take the company to court should the company proceed with its plan to retrench its more than 800 workers.
“As the NUM KwaZulu-Natal Region, we cannot sit and fold our arms while these mining bosses are busy subjecting our members to an abject poverty for the second time in 4 years. They did the same during the COVID19 pandemic the very same employer retrenched workers even though DMRE did not give them a go ahead” said Muzikayise Zakwe, NUM KwaZulu-Natal Regional Secretary.
