NUM Kwazulu-Natal region is concerned about developments at Richards Bay Minerals.

The National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) in KwaZulu Natal is extremely concerned about unfortunate developments happening at Richards Bay Minerals. NUM members are currently on forced leave for an unknown period of time due to community /contractors road blockages which started on the 6th of July 2018. These developments have resulted in a fatality of a security guard yesterday.

NUM calls for an urgent intervention by the government through the Department of Mineral Resources (DMR) on this matter before the situation becomes worse. We believe that issues between Richards Bay Minerals and community/contractors can be resolved if the government (DMR) and traditional leadership play their roles effectively.

"Our members have nothing to do with issues between RBM and their Community/contractors, therefore, we will not allow the employer to resort to statutory leave territory of our members. This is not for the first time our members day’s leave has been used in this manner since it happened in March this year (2018). The employer must introduce a leave of the special kind known as Community riot leave in order to avoid tapping into our members leave days," said NUM Kwazulu-Natal Regional Secretary Muzi Zakwe.
