NUM Matlosana region is shocked by the death of a mineworker and demands Harmony Gold to take full responsibility

Media Statement, 24 June 2024

The National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) Matlosana Region is shocked by the untimely passing away of one of Harmony Gold mineworker at Harmony’s Mine Waste Solution operation in Stillfontein.

The worker, who was with his colleague, perished after the car they were travelling with collided with a truck on the 16th June 2024 on the R502 road in Boksburg. The other worker has been admitted to hospital. The two workers were driving from East Paydam, heading to the Mine Waste Solution Plant using the company’s vehicle.

As a region, our primary concerns are that the company does not want to register and classify the accident as a mine accident and it has reported it to the DMRE not as mine related accident.

That on its own would disadvantage the deceased’ family and lead to the forfeiture of the benefits due to the employee as per the company policy on mine accident. We are taken aback by the company’s  refusal to take full responsibility of the accident.

The NUM Matlosana Region is highly disturbed by such uncalled for behaviour and we are strongly condemning such actions. It is clear that the management at Harmony Gold seeks to undermine the NUM and they do not respect the loss of life of our member.
