NUM members at Exxaro Arnot mine to embark on a march tomorrow

NUM Press Statement, 01 December 2015

NUM members at Exxaro Arnot mine to embark on a march tomorrow

The National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) members at Exxaro Arnot mine in Mpumalanga will be marching tomorrow (02 December 2015) to hand over a memorandum of their grievances to the mine management. The march will start at 14h00 at Exxaro Arnot Mine, Middelburg in Mpumalanga.

The decision by the NUM members to march is influenced by Eskom's decision not to renew a contract with Exxaro Arnot. More than 1,700 employees are going to lose their jobs if Eskom does not renew the contract.

The NUM members at Exxaro Arnot, therefore, demand the following

  • The contract between the EXXARO and ESKOM to be renewed with the same conditions to prevent the job losses of 1,700 employees with the potential to affect about 10,000 lives. This will contribute to the high rate of unemployment seating at 23% in the country.
  • We demand that ESKOM must give the contract that talks to the life span of the mine which is 2032 for job security, we understand that beyond 31-12-2015 ESKOM has to run using the coal on a long-term guaranteed supply of coal.
  • We demand that ESKOM must respect the ten points agreement signed by government, business, organised on the 31 August 2015.
  • We demand the quick intervention from the government to prevent the 1,700 jobs to be lost due to ESKOM decision that can result to load shedding and increase the high rate of unemployment in the country.
  • We demand that Eskom must respond to the letter written by NUM dated 02 November 2015, and the meeting must be convened to discuss the issues raised in the letter
  • We demand that ESKOM must take full responsibility of a liability of EXXARO of 1,700 employees with estimated 10,000 life to be affected by the decision.
