NUM Press Statement, 17 October 2017
NUM members at PPC Cement Slurry on strike.
The National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) members at PPC Cement Slurry are on strike over wages in Mafikeng. The NUM gave the company a notice to strike on Sunday last week and workers commenced with the industrial action on Monday. The company is offering workers an insulting offer of 6% across the board.
The NUM demands are as follows:
Wage increase: The NUM demands that PPC Slurry should offer its employees an across the board wage increment of 12%.
Housing allowance: The NUM demands that the company should provide all members with the R1000 for housing allowance.
Agency Shop Agreement: the union still maintain the position of the agency shop agreement.
Pool Car: The NUM demands a pool car so that the union leadership can attend union activities and meetings to service members.
Full-time health and safety: The NUM demands that the position of Health and Safety should be full-time as the safety of members and other workers are the first priority.
Time off to visit union members in hospitals: We demand the company must allow shop stewards to visit their members when they are in hospitals.
Wage gaps: The NUM demands that the company must close the wage gaps that exist within the company. The NUM feels that the management is creating the wage gaps instead of closing them.
