NUM Press Statement, 17 August 2016*
NUM members to march at Kalgold mine
The National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) members at Harmony Gold‘s Kalgold operation at Mafikeng in the Northwest province will embark on a march tomorrow (18 August 2016) to hand over a memorandum of their grievances.
Date: 18 August 2016
Time: 6 am
Venue: Harmony Kalgold Mine in Mafikeng
The NUM is demanding the following:
1. Polygraph Test
• We demand that the company to stop the issue of polygraph test with
immediate effect on our members and new recruits, and employees who were supposed to be recruited and qualify as per the recruitment policy must be recruited. We are aware that behind this polygraph
test Ramosiako Montshonyane is involved.
• This polygraph is used as a tool to dismiss the black workers as are the only workers who are failing the polygraph test
2. Portable skills training
• This matter is a long outstanding matter that must be implemented as per the agreements, workers who are entitled to benefit are not benefiting because they are dismissed on daily basis
3. Housing
• As Kalgold employees we must be treated as other Harmony employees in other operations who benefited on Housing schemes, which are available
• In 2012 we were promised solar panels as Kalgold employees and we rejected that proposal because we want houses.
• The Kalgold General Manager Joe Mosupyoe when employees raised the issue of housing responded by saying Kalgold workers are not entitled to have houses
4. Dust
• We demand that the company do something with the dust that is all over the crushers in our operation.
5. Contractors Disciplinary Code
• We demand that all contractors be disciplined according to Harmony
disciplinary code as the company is the main employer.
6. Racism
• It is only black employees who fail polygraph test and whites pass it.
This must stop.
• Anonymous email from Jerome alleging that certain foreman’s and
contractor are involved in theft cases and were never sent for polygraph test
• Black contractors were subjected to undergo polygraph test without
being suspected of theft and the contracts of the contractors are
terminated by the employer
7. Nepotism
• We are aware that Kalgold management is practising nepotism by recruiting General Manager’s cousin Piet Superintended without even declaring
8. Production
• As NUM we raised a concern to the company through Phillip Tobias about the production and also raised that Ore reserve manager is not performing and nothing is said by Harmony Management because it is the white manager .
Our operation only performs when there is intervention from other
operations.
9. Rejection of sick notes
• There are new tendencies by the supervisors or foreman's to reject the sick notes, even the company's doctors sick notes
10. Safety and Security of workers
• The life of the workers is in danger in the mine; criminal activities
are taking place in front of the workers while we are having a security
company that has responsibility to protect the assets of the company
11. We demand that the General Manager Joe Mosupyoe must go. He failed to run this operation implementing only unfavourable policies.
