NUM mourns passing of Emeritus Professor Vic Allen

The National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) is deeply disturbed and saddened by the passing away of Emeritus Professor Vic Allen yesterday. 

"He was a historian, stalwart and an anti-apartheid activist. He was a close friend of mineworkers in South Africa and around the world. A distinguished friend of the NUM and South Africa, an academic, intellectual and an international activist who has been a comrade and friend of the NUM throughout its struggles.," said Frans Baleni, NUM General Secretary.

Professor Allen was a selfless public intellectual figure; he published books and wrote extensively and his opinion was frequently sought on mining related issues around the world

Emeritus Professor Vicky Allen is the author of the “The History of Black Mineworkers in SA” three volumes, a project that he was assigned to write on behalf of the NUM by the founding General Secretary of the NUM Cyril Ramaphosa. 

He was also a fearless, committed and dedicated fighter who helped the NUM and campaigners in the fight against the brutal apartheid regime in South Africa.

The NUM will always remember Emeritus Professor Vic Allen as a great scholar, historian, teacher, gentle and kind person. 

The NUM sends its condolences to Professor Vic Allen's family and friends as a whole. May his soul rest in everlasting peace.
