NUM mourns the deaths of six workers at Eskom tunnel

The National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) strongly condemns the deaths of six workers who died when a tunnel collapsed at an Eskom construction site near Ladysmith in Kwazulu-Natal yesterday.

The NUM is disturbed by this tragic incident. As the NUM we have always emphasized the need of the Department of labour to reinforce its health and Safety inspectorate in the Construction and Energy Sector.

NUM Health and Safety Secretary Erick Gcilitshana expressed condolences to the families of the deceased and wishes the seven injured workers a speedy recovery.

Gcilitshana said it is with great sadness to loose six workers in an Eskom project in Ladysmith yesterday.

"As the NUM we are disturbed by this tragic incident. We are calling for an immediate investigation on what went wrong. We believe that such tragic incident can be prevented,” he said.
