NUM mourns the passing away of ANC deputy general secretary comrade Jessie Duarte
The National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) is highly disturbed and shocked by the passing away of ANC Deputy General Secretary Comrade Jessie Duarte yesterday. Comrade Jessie' passing is a great loss not only to her immediate family and friends but to the entire nation and the liberation movement at large.
Comrade Jessie was a liberator and unifier within the struggle for all South Africans across the racial lines. She was a matriarch and a great pillar to all in particular women as she represented them very well on issues that directly affected them.
As a committed internationalist and former diplomat, not only will she be mourned by her family, but by many South Africans and comrades across the globe.
Comrade Jessie Duarte left an enduring legacy for women leaders and helped pave the way for women to occupy and lead the highest levels of powerful positions within the ANC. She helped plant a foot inside the door and shouldered her way bravely to a roomful of men.
May her soul rest in everlasting peace.
