NUM mourns the passing away of its national energy sector coordinator comrade Paris Mashego

Press Statement, 11 August 2020

The National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) is deeply saddened and shocked by the passing away of its National Energy Sector Coordinator comrade Paris Mashego who passed away this morning. His untimely and unexpected loss comes as a shock. It is a sad loss to the NUM where he started his political career. Comrade Mashego was based at the NUM Head Office in Johannesburg as National Energy Sector Coordinator. He was humble, loyal, and indefatigable to the struggle of the country and for the Mine, Energy and Construction workers.

Before being appointed National Energy Sector Coordinator, Comrade Paris Mashego led the NUM with distinctions as a Regional Secretary in the Highveld Region and also served the union as a Chief Negotiator at Eskom. He always kept NUM members closer to his heart as he believed in mentoring and grooming capable young shop stewards. He fought tirelessly against corrupt activities that were seen to be ravaging the power utility and the continued load shedding crisis.

The sudden passing of comrade Mashego is a great loss to the NUM. As an accomplished negotiator, comrade Mashego will be sadly missed. The NUM sends its deepest condolences to comrade Mashego's family, friends and colleagues, wishing them strength and fortitude during this difficult time.

Details of the funeral will be communicated as soon as they become available.
