NUM National Women Structure Calls on President Ramaphosa to Implement the Presidential GBVF Declaration

The National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) National Women Structure is disgusted and deeply concerned with the extent of the continued Gender-Based Violence and Femicide that have clouded the country.

It is more disturbing especially when the structure just recently observed and commemorated the National Women’s Month, celebrated the strength of women demonstrated in 1956.

The NUM National Women Structure is highly shocked by the normalization of such acts and the continuous hateful killings of women and children and the manner in which it is escalating. We, therefore, call upon all communities to work hand in hand with the law enforcement agencies to ensure that the perpetrators are apprehended and brought to justice.

“We urge all the communities across the country to come together to condemn such crimes and to work towards creating a safer environment for all women and girls. Silence is complicity, we must all actively participate in ending gender-based violence”, said NUM National Women Structure Secretary Nthabiseng Mashiteng.

We welcome the move by the Acting police minister Firoz Cachalia for roping in the crime intelligence head Lt-Gen Dumisani Khumalo and the KwaZulu-Natal police commissioner Lt-Gen Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi to lead investigations into the recent killings of nine women in Ekurhuleni.

We equally condemn the recent threats echoed by the foreign national Lawrence Mudzinganyama, video flighted on national televisions and social media platforms, directing vulgar remarks and violent death threats to black South African women in a restaurant in Sandton, Johannesburg, for simply after they have rejected his sexual advances.

The NUM National Women Structure is outraged by this incident, particularly at a time when our country is confronting unprecedented levels of violence against women.

Mudzinganyama is allegedly a Zimbabwean businessman running businesses in South Africa from tenders in a construction sector where the NUM is organizing. It is alleged that he received construction tender and allegedly gained Construction Industry Development Board (CIDB) gradings in a strange way.

We welcome the Public Works and Infrastructure Minister Dean Macpherson’s intervention by ordering the CIDB to immediately investigate the matter and report back to him at the earliest opportunity.

The NUM National Women Structure is calling upon President Cyril Ramaphosa  to act swiftly in implementing the Declaration of the Presidential Summit against Gender-Based Violence and Femicide held on November 2018.

The NUM National Women Structure calls for the immediate fast-tracking by the government the reviewal of laws on Gender-Based Violence and not to allow bail for the offenders of Gender-Based Violence and Femicide.
