Press Statement, 09 August 2023
Today 09th August 2023, Women of South Africa commemorates Women’s Day as marked in our country's calendar to pay tribute and to carry forward the baton of more than 20 000 women who marched to Union Building on the 09th August 1956 to protest against the extension of Pass Law to women.
This month women of the NUM not only celebrate Women’s Day but commemorates the month of August and the strides that they walked through. We commemorate the birth of a GBV Hotline by Syked 0107463755 that will provide professional counselling services for members and their loved ones.
“We commemorate Women’s Month under the theme “Teach a Women, Empower the Nation through Political and Economic transformation," said NUM Women Structure National Secretary, Mathapelo Khanye.
The women of 1956 marched and fought against the system that was meant to control women and to even to further reduce them to passive beings. NUM National Women Structure adopted the concept of an Annual Women Seminar 3 years back in an effort and objective in reiterating its commitment to women within the trade union sphere and their place of work and their communities.
Amongst its education the NUM continues to integrate and enhance awareness among its members on:
“This women’s month and beyond I urge each one of us to commit herself to mentoring and sharing our skills and knowledge with women in both our communities and working environment," Khanye concluded.
