NUM Press Statement, 12 November 2014
NUM position on Voluntary Separation Packages at AngloGold Ashanti
On Friday 07 November 2014, the NUM had a meeting with AngloGold Ashanti management, and in the meeting management presented to the NUM that the company is over complement in some of the categories within the company and in our discussions it was agreed to look at other means of avoiding forced retrenchments. One of the means was that the company should open up enhanced Voluntary Separation Packages to employees so that those who opt to take severance packages should do so.
There is no agreement on forced retrenchments because the company has not served the union with the notice as required by section 189 of Labour Relations Act.
The NUM position is that there are still other options that can be looked at to avoid forced retrenchments.
