The National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) PWV Region invites media to attend its National Health and Safety TB Awareness Campaign commemoration.
The mining industry has historically been associated with a high prevalence of Tuberculosis (TB). The NUM has consistently been at the forefront of this fight, actively participating in drafting key health and safety guidelines through the Mine Health and Safety Council (MHSC) and running awareness campaigns.
TB is an infectious, caused by a germ called Mycobacterium tuberculosis. TB mainly affects the lungs but can be found in any part of the body. TB is both preventable and curable. TB treatment is easily accessible in public health facilities, and some mining houses do provide treatment to their employees through the inhouse medical hub.
This event will highlight the industry's ongoing efforts to ensure TB—a preventable and curable infectious disease—is eradicated among mineworkers.
