NUM refutes SAFCEC's return to work

The National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) notes the messages sent through smses by companies affiliated to the South African Federation of Civil Engineering Contractors (SAFCEC) calling on workers to return to work tomorrow on the basis that an agreement has been reached. The NUM has entered into no agreement with the employer companies represented by SAFCEC such as WBHO, Group Five, Grinaker-LTA, AVENG, Murray & Roberts and a dozen other civil engineering companies. Thus, the union rejects with contempt the ill-conceived manoeuvres by the construction companies to get workers back at work by hook or crook.
It is the Building, Construction and Allied Workers Union  (BCAWU) that has entered into such a useless agreement with the employers. The NUM appeals to its members not to go to work tomorrow and to continue with the two week long strike action until employers accede to the demands of construction workers.

The National Union of Mineworkers strongly condemns the errant behaviour of the construction companies and their refusal to accede to the justifiable demands of its members. Meanwhile, work at Medupi and Kusile power stations have come to a halt whilst strike action will hit Nkomati mine in Machadodorp in Mpumalanga on Friday.

The NUM has rejected the  8-10% offers from SAFCEC on the basis that the minimum amount remains low. The union demands that the minimum amount be moved from R4400 to R5500.
