NUM shocked and saddened by the killing of two women at Wedela in Carletonville last week

The National Union Union of Mineworkers (NUM) Carletonville Regional Women Structure will this afternoon march to Wedela Police Station to demand justice for two women (Inathi and Busisiwe) who were raped and brutally killed last weekend.

This happened while the country is commemorating the 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence (GBV).

As the NUM we are saddened and highly concerned with the high level of femicide taking place in our country. We call upon all gender formations to come together in fighting and condemning such gruesome and senseless killings of women.

The 16 Days of Activism Against Gender Based Violence is a national campaign aimed to raise awareness of the negative impact that violence and abuse have on women and children and to rid society of abuse permanently. GBV has been described by President Ramaphosa as a “pandemic”, and like a disease, it continues to cripple our society, depriving women and children of their right to be safe and continue with their daily lives without fear of being murdered or raped, if not both. It is a human rights violation which can lead to psychological trauma on its victims.

We demand that the perpetrators of this evil crime must be arrested. We demand that justice must prevail for these poor women. We urge the Minister of Police and the Minister of Justice and Correctional Services to prioritise and systematically deal with the perpetrators of such crimes.

The march will start at 2pm from Wedela extension 3 and proceed to the police station where a memorandum of demands will be handed over.
