NUM statement on the upcoming Cosatu Central Committee
The National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) is looking forward to a maximum participation by delegates at the Congress of South African Trade Union (Cosatu)'s Central Committee (CC)which is scheduled to starts next week.
As the NUM, we are ready to participate and we wish to emphasize that the Central Committee should be used as a platform to strengthen unity in the federation. We want to see a stronger Cosatu going forward. The Central Committee should also be a stage where delegates share notes on how to push forward the struggle of the working class.
The NUM will be looking forward to seeing the Central Committee resolving on the following issues affecting our members:
1. Massive retrenchments taking place in various sectors of the country's economy, in particular, the mining sector.
2. Pushing government and Eskom to reverse their decisions of closing five power stations in Mpumalanga.
3. Lily Mine must be held responsible for the delays in rescuing the three mineworkers trapped underground
4. Declare solidarity with thousands of workers stand to lose jobs at General Motors
The NUM wishes all the delegates to the Central Committee all the best in their deliberations. An injury to one is an injury to all!
