NUM supports Samwu Strike

NUM Press Statement, 30 March 2016

NUM supports Samwu Strike

The National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) fully support the South African Municipal Workers Union (Samwu) in their strike fighting for improved conditions of service and the equalisation of salaries and other issues at Pikitup.

As the NUM, we are saying that it is important for Samwu members to continue fighting for decent salaries because they are among the most oppressed and exploited proletarians in the world.

"The NUM strongly condemns acts of vandalism, violence, intimidation and the destruction of property by few bad elements masquerading as Samwu members. It is important for Samwu members to embark on a peaceful strike and not allow these bad elements to spoil what they are fighting for. The NUM is fully behind Samwu members in their struggle fighting for better salaries," said David Sipunzi, NUM General Secretary.
