NUM to commemorate the World TB Day in Carletonville.

The National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) will commemorate the World TB Day at Savuka Mine Stadium in Carletonville on the 16th of April 2016. The event will start 9:00 am.

The World TB Day is designed to build public awareness that tuberculosis today remains an epidemic in much of the world, causing the deaths of nearly one-and-a-half million people each year, mostly in developing countries

The NUM has partnered with the Department of Health (DOH), Department of Mineral Resources (DMR) Mine Health and Safety Council (MHSC), NIOH and Anglo Gold Ashanti in order to jointly raise awareness to workers and their partners.

The NUM Deputy President Joseph Montisetse will deliver a keynote address.

Mineworkers have a risk of contracting TB that is almost three times greater than that of the general population, and an incidence rate that is ten times higher than the level of a TB health emergency, as designated by the World Health Organization (WHO). In addition to their high risk of infection, many mineworkers in Southern Africa are made more vulnerable to difficulties they face in accessing health and social services, largely as a result of frequent migratory movements across provincial and national borders, and informal employment arrangements that may not cover health care.

The following services will be provided during the event
. HIV/AIDS counselling and testing
. TB screening and X-ray lung checking with rapid results
