NUM welcomes the sentencing of Binkie Mosiane's murderer

The National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) welcomes the sentencing of Binkie Mosiane's murderer who was sentenced to two life sentences at Mogwase High Court today in Rustenburg in the North West Province.

As the NUM, we welcome the final judgement of the gruesome murder suffered by Binkie Mosiane. We pray for her soul to finally rest in peace knowing that this heartless and evil monster will rot in jail. The sentencing today will bring closure to this painful chapter and the NUM still convey its deepest condolences to her family, relatives and friends.

Binkie Mosiane was brutally murdered on the 6th of February 2012 and her body was found in a pool of blood at Anglo American Platinum's Khomanani Mine, just outside Rustenburg. She was assaulted and killed underground.

As a vulnerable woman and a mineworker, she risked her life to support her family and faced all kinds of safety hazards underground. The news of her untimely and brutal murder was difficult to bear for the NUM and its members.

We hope that since her brutal death Anglo American Platinum has taken steps to improve the safety of women working underground so as not to deter women from seeking employment underground.

Sanki Molefe, NUM Rustenburg Women's Structure Chairperson in Rustenburg said: "The sentence itself cannot bring back the life of Binkie Mosiane. But we are happy that justice has finally been served."

As the country is currently celebrating 16 days of activism of no violence against women and children and the NUM hopes that these sentence will serve as a deterrent to others who consider committing similar crimes against women and children.

The NUM calls on all South Africans to rally behind the campaign of 16 days of activism against violence on women and children. We must all fight, expose and isolate monsters behind violence against women and children. 
The NUM abhor violence and call on the law enforcement agencies to act without fear or favour against these evil monsters or perpetrators of violence against women and children.
