NUM will not support Eskom's decision to sell Eskom Finance Company

NUM Press Statement, 06 March 2015

NUM will not support Eskom's decision to sell Eskom Finance Company

The National Union of Mineworkers, (NUM) strongly condemns any attempts by the power utility Eskom to sell some of its assets to raise capital.
Eskom Chief Executive officer (CEO) Tshediso Matona recently told Reuters Africa Investment Summit that Eskom might sell Eskom Finance Company, which is a home loan for employees at the state-owned company.
The NUM will never support any decision that will affect its members and other employees at the company.
We have observed the sustained attempts by Eskom to undermine labour as an important stakeholder at the company. The NUM has made several attempts to sensitize the entity `s leadership about these concerns but to no avail.
The NUM reiterates its initial position to push for a Save Eskom Campaign. Part of the campaign will be to ensure that the voices of the workers are embraced in any turn-around strategy by the company. We believe that it will be a grave mistake for workers not to be consulted in generating the improvement of the parastatal.

Lastly, we want to warn Eskom CEO Tshediso Matona that the NUM will never support the decision to sell the Eskom Finance Company.
