NUM Media Statement, 12 October 2016
NUM Youth Structure calls on students to isolate and expose hooliganism at the universities.
The National Union of Mineworkers (NUM-YS) calls on students from all universities to expose and isolate elements of thuggery and the barbaric actions that are hell bent on destroying the universities infrastructure.
"The current situation in our universities must correctly be characterised with the terminology it deserves. It is no longer #FeesMustFall Campaign but #FutureMustFall Campaign. The genuine struggle for students particularly the poor has been hijacked by opportunistic elements with a different agenda," said Sabelo Mgotywa, NUM-YS National Secretary.
"The destruction if correctly characterised in our universities now is nothing but counter-revolutionary, and it must be condemned with strongest possible terms. This is not a condemnation of the legitimate demand and struggles of the free education mobilisation. We are calling the office of the President to urgently release the Preliminary report of the commission that was set aside to look at the feasibility study on free education for the poor in our country," Mgotywa added.
The state is a key institution in modern day societies mainly because it is primary in the governance and entrenchment of democracy and stability .In this instance, this task is not being fulfilled. Thus we are highly disturbed by the failure of the state machinery to detect these negative actions before they occur. This speaks to the incompetence of the political personnel charged with this responsibility. The less we speak about Minister Mr. David Mahlobo of intelligence the better. He has completely failed to protect our country, people, and property. South Africans are more vulnerable under his leadership more than ever before. The strong actions of police in handling protests are a result of the failure of proper intelligence which should guide police work. As a result of this failure, our police operate under pressure and out of desperation for lack of prior preparation.
Our warning to government is that they should not spend time where it’s not needed and fail the people of this country. In this way, we call upon the honourable President Jacob Zuma to recall the Minister of Intelligence and replace him with a capable person who will defend this country and assist in the proper intelligence gathering there is no more time for minimum effort in executive authority in the state.
