One miner died at Sibanye Stillwater's Driefontein Mine.

The National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) is deeply worried that the mining industry has yet claimed another life of a mineworker, this time again at Sibanye Stillwater's Driefontein mine outside Carletonville. The mineworker died as a result of electrocution on Saturday (17 February 2018). Another miner died at Driefontein No.1 Shaft on the 12th of February 2017 as he was busy trying to blast the ore pass box that was blocked by big rocks. When the rock crushed he was then pushed by Mudrush that suffocated him to death.

The NUM regrets the death and passes its condolences to the bereaved family. These add to the ever-soaring figure of fatalities at Sibanye Stillwater operations that have come to regard death within its operations as both normal and natural whilst thousands of families lose their breadwinners on a daily basis.

The NUM demand that a Day of Mourning be observed where Driefontein Mine must not operate in honour and respect of the mineworker who died on Saturday. The fatalities that are happening at Sibanye Stillwater are totally unacceptable and intolerable.

One death is one death too many. We sell our labour, not our lives, lungs, and limbs.
