One NUM member killed and four seriously injured after being attacked by alleged Amcu members at Beatrix Mine in Welkom last night.

Press Statement, 22 November 2018

The National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) strongly condemn the attack last night of five our members at Sibanye-Stillwater Beatrix mine in Welkom, Free State. One NUM member was fatally shot while four others were seriously injured. Our members were randomly attacked in a bus transporting them to work allegedly by members affiliated to the Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union (Amcu).

“Our comrades were randomly attacked for no apparent reason. Those attackers started by closing the security gates, throwing stones at the bus that was transporting workers to work. Unfortunately, one of our members was shot and killed and others sustained serious injuries, says NUM Beatrix Branch Secretary Xolisa Nqwiliso.

The NUM is deeply shocked and saddened by this incident and we call upon the law enforcement agencies to hunt down the perpetrators or murderers of this evil and atrocious act and arrests those involved. We also call on the company to make sure that our members are protected.

The NUM condemns in the strongest possible words the killing of its member by these hooligans masquerading as workers. This is a criminal act.

The NUM conveys its deepest condolences to the bereaved family of the deceased during this difficult time and wishes a speedy recovery to the injured members.
