The National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) & AFRISAM Joint media statement.

NUM Press Statement, 19 February 2016

The National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) & AFRISAM Joint media statement.

Following recent allegations of racism at AfriSam’s Ulco operation and a resultant march on 4 February 2016 by NUM members and a number of media statements, senior management of AfriSam and leadership of the NUM met on 16 February 2016 to engage in constructive dialogue on this matter. The outcome of this meeting paved the way to ensure that a harmonious working relationship between both parties is restored

AfriSam believes in fostering positive relationships with its employees and union/s represented at its various operations and believes that it provides a work environment that promotes diversity and inclusivity. The company is pleased that an agreement has been reached by all parties on the way forward.

“AfriSam values the role trade unions play in its daily operation and we look forward to strengthening our relationship with the NUM. As a company we have no doubt that the points of action agreed by both parties will be honoured and that it will contribute towards fostering a long-term relationship going forward”, says Sandile Khwela, Human Resources Executive of AfriSam.

The NUM can confirm that it met with AfriSam management to try and find a solution to the alleged racism at the company. Both parties engaged robustly and honestly on the issue. The agreement does not nullify the concerns that our members have about the alleged racism at AfriSam Ulco operation. A number of mechanisms and processes have been identified and we will continue to monitor as the NUM to make sure that the agreement is implemented and the concerns of our members are addressed.
