The NUM is disappointed with Eskom behaviour in protecting a manager who is involved in alleged fraud at KZN Empangeni branch.

The National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) strongly condemns the behaviour of Eskom to protect unethical behaviour of its management who are involved in alleged fraud at Eskom Kwazulu-Natal (KZN) Empangeni branch.

The NUM is of the firm view that Eskom is protecting a middle manager at KZN Empangeni who is involved in alleged fraud. The manager was investigated for using an Eskom branded car instead of a scheme car that managers are allowed to use. He would claim kilometres as if he had used a scheme car. The manager resigned after the investigation and Eskom begged him to withdraw his resignation. This highly indicates that the individual is untouchable at Eskom.  The NUM would like to remind Eskom that electrification saga was not treated the same way where millions of rand were overspent by same management but our members were fired without the luxury of choosing to resign.

The NUM has observed that since 2012, there has been consistent defrauding of the company and nothing has been done to managers who are allegedly defrauding the company.

We urge Eskom Chief Executive Officer Matshela Koko to intervene on this matter as it is urgent for our members and to the integrity of the business.

The NUM feels that the manager is being protected and we urge Eskom to suspend him with immediate effect.  The NUM wants him suspended to protect members who reported the fraud so that they must not be victimised. 

The NUM will fight tooth and nail to defend its members and expose alleged fraud and corruption at Eskom.  The NUM will fight any unethical behaviour in the company that sacrifice workers for profit.
