The NUM to approach the Labour Court to challenge the decision taken by Seriti Resources to retrench 1,143 workers

Media Statement, 15 November 2024

The National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) in the Highveld Region has taken a decision to approach the Labour Court to challenge or fight the decision taken by Seriti Resources to retrench 1,143 workers in Mpumalanga.

"We have already activated our lawyers to approach the Labour Court. Today, November 15th, 2024, the Regional Secretary comrade Tshilidzi Mathavha and the Regional Chairperson comrade Bizzah Motubatse visited KPS. The BGM in Klipspruit endorsed our approach and the Program of Action," said Bizzah Motubatse, NUM Highveld Regional
Chairperson.

"As per the resolution of the Alliance meeting, we are mobilizing communities, the youth, the unemployed, students and every sector of society as we prepare for a war against the arrogant Employer," Motubatse said.

On the 14th of November 2024, the regional Leadership and branch Leadership from MMS and KPS met with the arrogant Employer called Seriti Resources. It was our third consultation since we were served with s189 by the arrogant employer to retrench 1,143 workers.

Seriti Resources made its presentation, and it was clear that the majority of our members in MMS and KPS do not have employment. The presentation confirmed our suspicion that Seriti Resources wants to end permanent employment and subject our members to contractors, whereby super-exploitation is the order of the day. Our members will no longer have medical aid, housing allowance, and travelling allowance.

The NUM requested an extension, but as usual, the arrogant Employer rejected our request, after a rigorous and vigorous caucus by the NUM we decided to declare a dispute, the NUM took a posture that said we could not allow the employer to reduce our members and direct them to contractors.

We remain very firm and unshaken.

This is a class struggle, and we are determined to fight against rapacious capitalists and capitalist barbarism.

We want to request that our members remain calm and not be confused by the nonsensical brief that comes from the arrogant Employer.

Victory is certain, Let's focus.
