NUM Press Statement, 17 March 2016

The NUM Western Cape statement on the dismissal of twelve workers by the NMC Construction Company

The National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) in the Western Cape region is angered by the dismissal of about 12 workers by NMC Construction Company precisely because they demanded safe drinking water. These workers are employed by Cape Town based NMC construction company and all are from Cape Town currently working on a site in Carnarvon, Northern Cape.

In fact, this is disgusting, to say the least, and demonstrate the highest level of arrogance to the bosses of NMC whom according to their understanding workers are not human beings rather tools who have no right to complain.

As the NUM, we will leave no stone unturned to ensure that all these workers return to their work and are compensated. However, they should only return if their demands are met.

Their dismissal is indeed the reckless act which is motivated by the racist conduct of the employer. It further reveals there are still employers who are careless about workers in particular black workers all that matters is their exploitation.

The NUM in the Western Cape region calls for their reinstatement. We will use whatever is at our disposal to challenge this unfair dismissal of our members in a democratic society.
