STANDERTON, MPUMALANGA – The National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) is mourning the tragic loss of nine employees and a minibus taxi driver following a devastating road accident on Thursday morning, May 21, 2026.
The victims were en route to their shift at Seriti Resources’ New Denmark mining operation in Standerton when their taxi collided with a truck. Among the deceased were six NUM members, including the high-ranking NUM New Denmark Deputy Secretary.
Yesterday, grieving families, colleagues, and union leaders gathered for a deeply emotional memorial service to honor the victims. The service drew high-level union dignitaries, including:
Additional leaders from the NUM Highveld Region and the NUM Youth Structure National leadership led by National Secretary Comrade Xolani Mkhabela, were also present.
NUM President Phillip Vilakazi delivered a powerful and emotional tribute, anchoring a solemn day of remembrance for the fallen workers.
