Unconditional retraction of allegations and apology to Sibanye Gold Limited

Press Statement, 09 April 2018

UNCONDITIONAL APOLOGY OF ALLEGATIONS AND APOLOGY TO SIBANYE GOLD LIMITED DATED

I, Livhuwani Mammburu, the Spokesman of the National Union of Mineworkers (“NUM”), being duly authorised to make this statement, confirm that:

  1. the NUM hereby unconditionally retracts the following portions of the statement made of and concerning Sibanye Gold Limited (“Sibanye”) in the press release on its website, www.num.org.za, on 5 October 2016, under the following heading “NUM member allegedly attacked and assaulted by AMCU members yesterday passed away”, as well as any similar statements made to any third party:

We are calling on Sibanye Gold to take full responsibility of our member's death after they failed to provide security to protect him. Sibanye Gold management at Cooke operations were informed and warned of a plan to attack our members by these hooligans, but they did nothing. They even refused to call the SAPS to come and protect our members.

The NUM will continue to fight capitalists barbarism in the mining industry that always divides black mineworkers and encourage them to kill one another.

  1. the NUM also hereby unconditionally retracts the following portion of the statement made of and concerning Sibanye in the press release on its website, www.num.org.za, on 28 October 2016, under heading “NUM is extremely worried that perpetrators who attacked and assaulted our members at Cooke Operations last month have not been arrested”, as well as any similar statements made to any third party:

This is an anti-worker and anti-people decision. It is evil and is part of the capitalist barbarism.

The NUM will continue to fight capitalists barbarism in the mining industry that always divides black mineworkers.

  1.  the NUM hereby unconditionally apologises to Sibanye for making these statements.
