WFTU congratulates NUM for signing a five-year wage agreement with Harmony Gold

Press Statement, 05 April 2024

The World Federation of Trade Unions (WFTU) congratulates the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) and other trade unions for signing a five-year wage agreement with Harmony Gold Mine at the Birchwood Hotel in Boksburg yesterday.

This demonstrates a clear commitment to the collective bargaining processes as opposed to many companies that unashamedly shun and undermine existing collective agreements.

WFTU calls on Sibanye Stillwater and other companies who always exert retrenchment as a way to instill fear in workers when or about to submit their wage and terms of conditions demands to emulate the aforementioned posture.

Notably, we, however, remain committed to working side-by-side, shoulder-to-shoulder with all progressive unions in their endeavour to fight for the improvement of the well being of workers against unscrupulous employers.

The solidarity and unity of the workers are paramount and sacrosanct in advance to the hegemony of the working class.
